Eight Wins in Seven Days

Eight Wins in Seven Days

In one of the most successful varsity weeks in documented history at St. Lawrence College, Surge teams consisting of women’s and men’s rugby and soccer amassed a total of eight wins in only seven days.

WOMEN RULE THE WEEK

The women’s rugby team led the week with three wins. All victories occurred on Saturday, September 16 at the Loyalist College hosted Women’s Rugby Sevens tournament where the Surge were successful against Algonquin, Loyalist, and Fleming. Leading the Surge was a welcome re-addition to the team in Alle Arsenault, who returned the team after a year off. She led the team with multiple tries and made many pivotal defensive stops to help SLC construct an undefeated first tournament to start the season. The early season points are vital in securing provincial tournament positioning and with three wins already, the women’s rugby team can rest confidently until their next match on Saturday, September 23 in Durham.

Women’s soccer continues to impress and prove they can’t be taken lightly in this league, as they stormed Sault College 12-0 on September 10 with three hat-tricks coming from three different players, Elli Parsons, Ella Van Hal, and Samantha McDonald. The momentum continued through to Wednesday, September 13 in Belleville when the Surge toppled Loyalist 4-1 to push SLC to a 2-1 record to start the season. The game was highlighted by a lightning fast second-half goal where Elli moved through the Loyalist defense and scored just 10 seconds into the half. Elli’s multiple goal games puts her at 3rd in the league for goals scored with 5 in three games.

MEN KEEP ROLLING

The men’s soccer team continued pace with two more wins last week. On Sunday, September 10, they’d make history for St. Lawrence, scoring 14 unanswered goals against the Sault Cougars. The onslaught was kick started by a speedy steal from Jacob Ball off the opening whistle where he darted past the defense, stole the ball, and scored just 11 seconds into the game. 2nd year striker, Jacob Ball, netted his league leading 7th goal in just two games at the time. The men would find success again on Sunday, September 17, but the game was plenty different. After a flurry of yellow cards, 11 in total, and an uneven shot total that favored SLC 23 to 3, Surge rookie sensation Duarte Ventura Oliveira scored the game winning 1-0 goal in the 97th minute to keep the Surge undefeated on the season.

In rugby, the men kicked off their 2023 campaign on the road against Algonquin on Saturday, September 16. Missing several players due to athlete registrations not being completed on time, it was unknown how the short-rostered team would fare against the Wolves. It didn’t take long for the Surge to make their mark and prove to Algonquin that they came to compete and win.  Veteran scrum half Logan DeVerteuil scored two tries with Jack Hay converting many in a lopsided 36-10 win for SLC. They return home on Saturday, September 23 against Conestoga at 1pm where they’ll look to keep the momentum rolling.
