Surge cricket is here!

Touted as the world’s second most popular sport, cricket has found its home at St. Lawrence College (SLC). Backed by a high demand from local and international communities, the sport will be hosted at SLC’s Kingston campus and run from November to March within the Ontario Collegiate Recreation (OCR) league.

The team’s first season will see them face off against tenured teams in Ontario, but before doing so, Surge needed to secure the head coaching role.

“In order to compete at this level, we needed a coach with experience – someone who knows the sport and can be a leader in teaching and cultivating it to others,” said varsity athletics coordinator, Josh Lindup.

After an extensive search, Surge found their coach in New Zealander Malcolm Anderson, a 20-year veteran of the sport with experience at club and provincial levels. As a former captain, Malcolm brings with him a wealth of playing experience having played in every position, including opening batsman, spin bowler, opening bowler, and wicketkeeper.

“I enjoy the sport. I enjoy coaching and teaching, and I believe I can make a significant contribution to developing cricket at St. Lawrence College,” said Anderson.

Malcolm's athletic resume is complimented by a long history of coaching and mentoring in various sports, including cricket, soccer, and karate.

“I’m really pleased and excited to be coaching the very first cricket team at St. Lawrence College,” added Anderson. “We held several tryout sessions, and we have a strong group of players who made the team and are getting ready for the tournaments ahead of us – starting with our first tournament this coming Friday in Belleville.”

Surge’s Josh Lindup will oversee the sport’s success off the pitch, organizing the team’s travel, schedule, and other administrative duties throughout the season.

“The college is very fortunate to have Malcolm coaching this new team. We’re all very excited and looking forward to our inaugural season,” said Lindup.

As part of the OCR league, cricket is not yet a varsity sport at the Ontario college level but does involve a season long schedule that culminates in an end-of-year tournament to crown a provincial winner. OCR itself is a network of programs and activities that Ontario colleges participate in that offer healthy alternatives to the high demand and skill requirements of varsity level sports.
