Surge Wins Men's Singles and Doubles at Invitational
The Surge varsity badminton team travelled to Centennial College in Scarborough this past weekend for the third Invitational of the season.
Returning duo Afsar Chowdhury (Kingston) and Brandon Watkins (Cornwall) were in top form together as they powered their way through the Men’s Doubles B bracket. After a first round bye, the two went on to beat George Brown (21-2, 21-6), Cambrian/Humber (21-10, 21-6), and Cambrian (21-10, 21-17) to capture the B bracket championship.
First year Surge student-athlete, Nadeem Nahaz (Kingston), put on a show in the Men’s Singles Consolation bracket. After an unfortunate fall in the 2nd round, Nadeem went on an undefeated streak, earning victories against George Brown (21-9, 21-9), Fanshawe (21-8, 21-15), Conestoga (21-18, 21-16), and finally George Brown again (21-17, 21-8) to win the Consolation Final.
The Surge team was rounded out by rookie Zack Goodfellow (Kingston) who competed in the Men’s Single bracket. Zack’s first matchup proved a tough one as the competed and lost (21-6, 21-7) to the eventual quarter-finalist, Centennial College. In the Consolation round, he again matched up against a strong opponent in Seneca where he fell a closely contested battle 21-17, 21-16.
